Brief history

The once tired and dated 1980s six storey open plan office development sits at a busy intersection of Bristol City Centre, on a crossroads that has recently undergone major improvement works.

Project Vision

The aspiration for the interior look and feel of One Hundred was to transport people from the external hustle and bustle of their journey to an internal space that was tranquil and sophisticated. The choice to prioritise retrofitting over demolition and to juxtapose new and old in harmony signifies the project's dedication to preserving the city's architectural heritage whilst simultaneously embracing modern functionality.

Design Intent

The design champions both the old and new. Rather than concealing or blending elements, the approach celebrates traditional features alongside contemporary additions. This balanced contrast ensures that the new additions complement, the original design, allowing each era’s character to shine.

The result is a striking, harmonious aesthetic that respects the building’s history and delivers an uncompromising modern workspace.

Design Delivery

The luxurious, relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, a hotel reception, is cultivated by the interiors. It begins as you enter; you’re met, with the double height ceiling that is flooded with natural light creating a sense of openness. The thoughtfully designed open-plan floor plates make the most of the building’s original character, accommodating exposed concrete columns, beams, and services that add an authentic, industrial charm. This flexible layout allows occupants to tailor the space to reflect their individual needs and personalities.

Sustainability

The sustainability of the interior design is highlighted through the careful selection of materials, including Neolith for the countertops, Camira Rivet Fabric upholstery, and Bolon flooring. By choosing high-performance, durable options crafted from recycled and natural resources, the design upholds our commitment to reducing environmental impact while maintaining a refined and functional space.

User experience

What sets this design apart is the alternation of the handling’s on each floor, a deliberate decision aimed at enhancing user experience and embracing inclusivity. Going beyond mere compliance, One Hundred boasts a fully accessible provision on every floor.

Wellbeing

Pivotal to the development of the interior design was the focus on occupant wellbeing. The design places a premium on the health and wellbeing of its occupants, as exemplified by the vibrant and active ground floor, which not only attracts passers by but evokes curiosity providing a window into the building's diverse functions and activities, reinforcing its role as a dynamic and community-centric space.

Our structural embodied carbon calculations for the primary structure achieve (at 105 kgCO2e/m2) a Structural Carbon Rating Scheme (SCORS) rating of A — meeting the SCORS, RIBA, and Low Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI) commercial targets set for 2030!"

Working Areas

The extensive informal working areas at the ground floor support the goal of creating a high-quality workspace that suits occupiers' needs while promoting health and well-being. These adaptable spaces cater to both focused and collaborative work, enhancing comfort, flexibility, and promoting a positive work culture that evolves with employees' needs.

Double-Height Glaze

The design incorporates a contemporary double-height glazed reception, enhancing the openness of the space. This feature maximises natural light flow, creating a bright and welcoming environment for both visitors and occupants.

Complicated retrofit of a previously unattractive building is really important as a gateway to Bristol. Boundary pushing, visually interesting development. Impressively carbon neutral too."
