A Brief History

Project delivered by: Hatcher Prichard

Briarwood Post 16 Centre, located in Fishponds, Bristol, is a purpose-built facility designed to meet the specific needs of 24 young adults with a range of Special Educational Needs. This specialised environment was created to support students with profound and multiple learning difficulties, severe learning difficulties, and autism, offering a safe and functional space for these individuals to learn, grow, and thrive.

Project Vision

The vision for the Briarwood Post 16 Centre was to create a serene, supportive environment tailored to the unique needs of students with Special Educational Needs. The vision prioritises calmness, accessibility, and independence, empowering young adults to navigate their learning journey with confidence. Emphasising indoor-outdoor learning, flexibility, and sensory-friendly spaces, the Centre's core focus is inclusivity, ensuring that all users feel supported and valued throughout their experience.

Design Delivery

The design of Briarwood Post 16 Centre was carefully executed to meet the specific needs of its young adult users. The building offers a calm flow of spaces with ample room. The main corridor is uncluttered with high level north facing windows punctuated along it’s length. Each classroom has an external door with level access to encourage indoor and outdoor learning. A mature colour palette throughout, reflects the pupils’ seniority. A bespoke highlight colour in each room reduces reliance by pupils on signage.

Community Area

Whilst large windows allow sunlight to beam through, the option of blinds allows for control over light levels, ensuring comfort and focus when needed. White walls serve as a neutral backdrop, ensuring that sensory lighting, such as those used during social activities or film screenings, are clearly visible and effective.

Partitioning Sliding Doors

The use of sliding doors allows the large space to seamlessly transition between the relaxed lounge area and a functional kitchen-dining space. The flexibility allows the space to be adapted based on the day's activities and the needs of the pupils, ensuring it remains functional and inclusive.

We are very pleased with the building which exceeded our expectations in providing a positive learning environment. From the outset Simon was keen to fully understand our vision for the Post 16 centre and the differing needs of the students. At every point Simon has sought to involve the whole school community which generated ownership of the new building.”
