A Brief History

Project delivered by: Hatcher Prichard

Briarwood Nexus is a dedicated facility in North Bristol, designed to support eight secondary-age pupils with complex needs. As a ‘Nexus’ building, it caters specifically to students with Profound Learning Difficulties, Severe Learning Difficulties, and those on the autism spectrum, providing highly tailored, individualised care and education.

The new building now shares the existing reception and administration facilities that are housed in the existing secondary school.

User Experience

The focus on individual teaching, safety, and a non-institutional feel highlights a user-centered approach. Each pupil benefits from individualised teaching, supported by two carers and specialists, creating a tailored learning environment that prioritises comfort, engagement, and personal growth.

Stimulating Spaces for Learning

Rooms are light, bright and airy to stimulate their use, and are adequate and appropriate for the curriculum and organisation of the school.

Flexible and Efficient

Eight single occupancy classrooms are clustered in groups of two or three, with partitioning sliding doors to allow the school the flexibility of opening up classrooms into larger teaching spaces.

Serene Views for Focused Learning

The windows are purposefully positioned at a high level, offering pupils serene views of the trees and sky. This design choice minimises distractions while providing a calming connection to nature, enhancing both focus and wellbeing.

Thoughtful Design

Pupils are considered a risk to themselves and/or others, so the design is robust yet thoughtful, prioritising their specific needs while ensuring both safety and functionality.
