A400M Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Facility

AWW was appointed to design a secure, technically advanced warehouse and engineering workshop for A400M military surveillance and transport aircraft. In addition to housing aircraft in hangars equipped with overhead cranes, the building contains specialist workshops, together with parts stores, offices and welfare facilities.

The building colour and shape is intended to reflect the sky and soften the impact of the 22,000m2 steel-frame building on its surroundings.

The design was constrained by demands of the airbase; clearances around runways and taxiways, the operational requirements of the aircraft and the need to avoid interference with radar and aircraft guidance systems.

Practical completion of the A400M hangar at Brize Norton marked a new highpoint for the DIO in their transition to full BIM Level 2 design through construction to handover.
