Maintenance Repair & Overhaul Facility

Maintenance Repair & Overhaul Facility

AWW was appointed for the design of a 22,000sqm, three bay maintenance hangar to service A400M and C17 military transport aircraft. In addition to housing three aircraft in hangars equipped with overhead cranes, the building contains specialist workshops for engines, propellers, undercarriage etc., together with parts stores, offices, welfare and mission planning functions.

The design was heavily constrained by the demands of the airbase, in particular the need to avoid interference with radar and aircraft guidance systems, clearances around runways and taxiways, and the operational requirements of the aircraft. The building achieved DREAM Very Good and is EPC A rated.

This is a well executed design of a complex and contextually constrained project by an experienced team and at review project team communication appeared mature and effective. The design meets Defence minimum standards for this type of facility whilst at the same time ingeniously reconciling Town Planning, operational, and other fundamental issues. As a consequence the resulting form of the facility is both functional whilst at the same time somewhat stealthily composed to soften and minimise visual impact without detriment to a taut and efficient section.
