Lodge Hotel, Putney

The Lodge Hotel, Putney, located to the north-eastern side of Upper Richmond Road occupies a pair of Victorian villas linked by a later two-story infill extension with substantial one, two and three storey extensions at the rear. AWW submitted a proposal for alterations including demolition of single and two-storey outbuildings at the rear and erection of three-storey rear extension to provide 25 new bedrooms.

AWW’s design mixes traditional brick material with minimal detailing and the rain screen cladding to provide an extension which is contemporary in design while complimenting the surrounding traditional architecture. The planning application committee unanimously granted permission and concluded that the extension would refine and improve the layout of the existing Lodge Hotel and improve its viability.

The design incorporates a modular build maximising sustainable elements such as photovoltaics, solar thermal panels and a green roof in addition to a well insulated envelope with efficient thermal performance. The extensive green roof forms part of the sustainable urban drainage (SuDs) strategy for this tight urban site. It also helps to reduce heating and cooling loads on the building whilst doing its bit for supporting local biodiversity and improving air quality.
