The difference between a space intended to be inclusive and one that actually achieves inclusivity? A team that recognises diversity and embraces it, that strives to remove barriers to accessibility. The result is a workspace that goes beyond aesthetics.

This was at the forefront of the design that our interiors team has delivered for Costain in their latest workspace. The project was led by a desire for a more agile way of working, necessitating a design that is both highly functional and reflective of Costain's innovative and forward-thinking ethos.

Through listening to, and working alongside, those that will utilise the space, acknowledging their challenges, concerns, constraints and aspirations a design was born. One that responds sensitively, flexibly and timelessly. The result is a significant new HQ in a central London location.

Costain’s HQ demonstrates the positive impact thoughtful interior design can have on employee wellbeing. By addressing the diverse needs of employees through dedicated quiet spaces, retreat rooms, and the incorporation of natural elements, the design has successfully created a workplace that supports both physical and mental health.

The materials palette delignates spaces, cultivates immersion and delivers a timeless aesthetic.

To cater to neurodiverse individuals, the environment incorporates soft finishes, natural textures, acoustic materials and adjustable lighting that creates a calming and supportive atmosphere. Employee engagement is enhanced through the development of a café and collaboration area designed to foster a sociable and energised start to the workday. Biophilic design principles are integrated throughout the space, with abundant planting to promote well-being.

Our design has faced the challenge of encouraging employees back to the office post pandemic head on; in creating a welcoming and adaptable environment that employees are comfortable to return to. Throughout the design development and delivering the values, ethos and brand of Costain remained consistent.

Overall, in curating an interior that prioritised diversity and accessibility we have exceeded client expectations, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the workspace, leading to increased employee satisfaction and productivity.
