AWW Director Mark Alker Stone was a speaker at Women in Property / CIBSE’s recent Brexit round-up. In addition to the existing skills shortages, post Brexit, the construction industry may have to deal with further issues around non-UK nationals. Joining Mark on the expert panel chaired by Peter Bull, Director at ARUP were Hywel Davies, Technical Director CIBSE and government advisor, Jo Davis, planner and Senior Director Bilfinger GVA and David Gascoigne, Managing Director at pensions specialists Trigon Ltd.
Mark reiterated that 10% of the construction workforce was born outside the UK, and many are very highly skilled specialists. Replacing such skills if Brexit brings about restrictions on non-UK workers will not be a quick or easy process. He commented that contractors are already concerned when asked to tender for large projects not being let for 12-18 months owing to this level of uncertainty around inflation and this will inevitably lead to prices increasing. In order to create sufficient positive outcomes for the construction industry Mark said: “we need to be innovative and smart”.
Rachael Sherratt, Associate Director at NOMA Architects and WiP South West Branch Committee Member who co-organised the ARUP sponsored event with CIBSE has written an overview of the discussion here.
