Project Breakdown

Communal Student Living

As part of the ongoing successful relationship with BlackRock, AWW was appointed to develop a new student accommodation design within an established area of student housing in Plymouth.

Regents Cottages will offer 193 student rooms. Five-six ensuite bedrooms with communal living spaces are arranged in 36 cluster flats, and three self-contained studio flats.

The building has been designed to be a contemporary addition to the architectural fabric of the city centre, with flat roofs, clean lines and a reduced palette of materials. It is set on a long narrow site with a 4m fall from north to south.

Energy usage is minimised by providing a highly insulated and air tight building. Energy generating photovoltaic panels have also been installed, covering the entire roof.

Project Result

“I welcome the planning committee’s decision in freeing up 193 homes. It’s a well-managed site and the management plans are excellent – probably the most in-depth that we’ve seen in any application.”

Cllr Chaz Singh, Plymouth City Council

Director’s Quote

“Following our successful delivery of Frobisher House for Urban Cribs, we are delighted to have been selected as the architects for this contemporary student residential scheme. The proposed site is ideally located for student housing. The site is inhabited by derelict buildings that have little architectural value. There is an opportunity to create a proposal that stitches into the surrounding fabric. The building has been designed to be a contemporary addition to the architectural fabric of the city centre. Flat roofs, clean lines and a reduced palette of materials contribute to an elegant, uncluttered design.”
