Project Breakdown

The Lodge Hotel, Putney, located to the north-eastern side of Upper Richmond Road occupies a pair of Victorian villas linked by a later two-story infill extension with substantial one, two and three storey extensions at the rear. AWW architects submitted a proposal for alterations including demolition of single and two-storey outbuildings at the rear and erection of three-storey rear extension to provide 25 new bedrooms.

AWW’s design mixes traditional brick material with minimal detailing and the rain screen cladding to provide an extension which is contemporary in design while complimenting the surrounding traditional architecture. The planning application committee unanimously granted permission and concluded that the extension would refine and improve the layout of the existing Lodge Hotel and improve its viability.

The design incorporates a modular build maximising sustainable elements such as photovoltaics, solar thermal panels and a green roof in addition to a well insulated envelope with efficient thermal performance.

Sustainability

The extensive green roof forms part of the sustainable urban drainage (SuDs) strategy for this tight urban site. It also helps to reduce heating and cooling loads on the building whilst doing its bit for supporting local biodiversity and improving air quality.

Sustainability Information

On Site Energy Generation – Photovoltaic solar panels running air source heat pumps which use reclaimed thermal energy to produce hot water, channelling unwanted heat back into the system.

Director’s Quote

“The combined team effort has delivered a significant boost to The Lodge Hotel out of this constrained site and we are pleased to have been involved with Ben’s project from inception some 5 years ago to its successful conclusion.”

AWW has been a great partner to work with and along with my team and I, we are all very excited by the potential of the hotel…..Starting with a clean slate, it was important that the new spaces are both future proof and sustainable. Our ultimate aim is to ensure the comfort of our guests for years to come – which has always been our main focus at The Lodge, right from the very first day my grandparents opened the hotel in 1970.
