Bespoke Hotels, who have previously worked with AWW to create the award winning Cornwall Hotel, commissioned AWW to design the rooftop extension to the Bermondsey Square Hotel in the heart of London with excellent views towards the London Eye and River Thames.
The restrictions of the existing rooftop services and circulation presented a challenge, but by linking into original vertical stair & lift cores, the terrace is accessible to all and provides a valuable space for meeting, function and media uses.
A combination of photovoltaic panels on the south elevation plus full natural cross-venting will minimise energy use for the new structure, and a sedum roof will provide a welcome urban stop-off for passing butterflies.
“A clever use of a slender structural frame behind a highly glazed façade allows for excellent views from the terrace and a seamless transition from the internal to the external portions of the space.”
AWW has a strong division in their armory which specialises in interior design. They are a bright bunch! Consistently producing sharp, well observed, thoroughly researched work with dollops of élan and dashes of brio. Would Bespoke Hotels work with them again?........certainly. Why?.........because unusually for a design team they are good at listening, which ensures there is a rare emotional intelligence about their work... Robin Sheppard - Client
