AWW was appointed to help produce the medium term phased redevelopment strategy plans for the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in North London. The existing hospital buildings are arranged around the chapel of St John which is Grade II* listed with other buildings designated as being ‘of merit’ and all are within the St John’s Wood conservation area.
AWW’s new extension to the hospital comprised 6,500sqm of clinical space linking into the existing buildings with laminer flow operating theatres for both day and inpatients surgery. The hospital is located in a dense urban setting and is extremely tight, bordered on all sides with existing buildings and underneath by a live underground train line.
The provision of a large roof-mounted solar photovoltaic array will offset 5% of all CO2 output from the new building.
“We plan to provide a minimum of four new theatres with recovery and ancillary spaces as the first phase of development with the ability to add a further two theatres as a subsequent phase whilst providing an appropriate and respectful response to the existing buildings and the St John’s Wood Conservation Area.”
