Project Breakdown

This FE new build project regenerated a brownfield site in the centre of Portsmouth, in the heart of the student quarter. The seven storey, 5,400sqm building comprises six large teaching kitchens and additional kitchens serving a staff/student refectory (top floor) and a public access silver service restaurant (ground floor).

The scheme also accommodated a number of IT facilities, health and childcare facilities, dental suite with laboratory, a crèche and a number of general teaching classrooms.

The environmental design strategy was driven by the acoustically challenging context and the eight heavily serviced commercial kitchens. Careful space planning enabled natural ventilation and passive measures to be maximised.

Project Result

“In this building we have not just got bricks and mortar, we have got the feel of Highbury.”

Stella Mbubaegbu, Principal and Chief Executive, Highbury College

Director’s Quote

“The design of the building responds to the urban context, largely fills the tightly constrained site and provides an interesting and contemporary addition to the Portsmouth streetscape. The massing and space planning reflect the varying site conditions and although there was no opportunity to provide external amenity space, the building is configured around a central atrium which enhances the entrance experience, encourages social interaction and leads to the top floor recreation facilities which enjoy great views over the city.”
