Demolition work has started on Frobisher House, the new student halls of residence in Plymouth city centre. Working with Midas Construction AWW has been appointed by Urban Cribs to develop a new student accommodation project in the historic conservation area of Ebrington Street.

In the heart of the student quarter, Frobisher House will offer 132 rooms arranged in cluster flats of 3 – 10 bedrooms all with ensuites and communal living areas, designed to create a social and community atmosphere.

The existing 1960s building, formerly used as industrial space, is currently being demolished to enable the creation of a 7 storey new build project providing 6 floors of accommodation with retail use at street level. The external envelope has been designed to reflect the client’s and Plymouth City Council’s aspirational look for the area using cedar boarding and stone banding to mirror the nearby buildings with the penthouse levels intended to blend into the skyline, whilst offering enviable views across the city towards the Plymouth Sound.

The internal areas have been specifically designed to reflect Plymouth’s vibrant atmosphere and include state of the art security systems, broadband and flat screen TVs, with a blue sky study space and cinema suite.

AWW’s Ian Sanders commented “We are delighted to be involved with this very exciting proposal and look forward to adding to the rich and diverse architecture on Ebrington Street. There is a requirement for high quality student accommodation in Plymouth and this development will provide a centrally located hub with excellent facilities for students.”

Construction work is due to start in January 2013 ready for students to move in in the autumn.
