Education : Hayesfield Girls’ School
In June 2008, AWW won an architectural competition to design new facilities for Hayesfield Girls School in Bath. These include a large sports hall, classrooms, dining facilities, and performance hall. Whilst construction took place the school remained fully functioning. The site had considerable planning challenges being within a leafy residential area, within the view of the city.
The existing school grounds fall some 12m across the site and AWW’s design took advantage of this topography by partially burying the larger elements of the scheme in the side of the hill. The main foyer spaces form a heart to the new school, and cascade down across the site, allowing views northwards across the city. The design team blended the exisiting facilities with a new performance hall with the minimal of remodelling. The new gymnasium and dance hall were thus achiveved within a tight budget.
